The SBCAG has just released a draft of the AI Bike Map Model for public comment. I’ve been part of this group for the last year or so, collecting information on the various roads in Santa Barbara County. Each road in Santa Barbara county was classified based on its “comfort” through an AI process. They’re now asking the public to use their experience to fill in anything that’s been missed.

To see the map, scroll to the bottom of the included email and click on the brown box that says Review AI Bike Map Model.
Once the model opens,
1. click on the bar that says “Explore“,
2. find a location to comment on and tap on it to place a dot on the map,
3. click on the “Pin a comment” field,
4. select the “Report Type” field and use the pull-down on its right to classify the location,
5. enter your “Comment”, and finally
6. “Submit” your entry.
(Those not yet eligible for Medicare will be able to do all this without instructions. Then there’s the rest of us.)
The interface is a bit clumsy, but you get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Alberto ask to encourage you to help improve the map by filling in whatever info they can? Note the map didn’t initially include any information on road shoulders. The project leaders were amazed to learn that a lot of (if not most!) rural riding takes place outside of bike lanes. I filled in data on several of the welcoming shoulders in the Valley but could help filling in any I missed. Any Valley road without a welcoming shoulder or bike lane will certainly be labeled “non-conforming”. We can safely ignore those. Note that I have no experience with roads around Santa Maria where the infrastructure seems really meager. If you have any contacts there, it would be great to loop them in on this.
There’s a huge difference between the available biking infrastructure in the city of Santa Barbara versus what you’ll find in the other half of the county.
